Midnight Notion unknowingly began when front man, Bryce Kalal, was just a toddler. Though none of his family members had any musical experience, he was introduced to guitars, drums, and keyboards at a very young age. Unfortunately, he had no one to teach him the techniques, so the instruments collected dust and were eventually sold off. Growing up, it seemed that a career in sketch art would be more likely for him, according to friends and family.
In the 6th Grade, Kalal signed up for middle school band class without hesitation. He picked up the French Horn and quickly surpassed his classmates in ability, taking in every lesson taught by his instructors and applying them. He would frequently stay after school to use the band room equipment, eventually becoming self-taught on piano and drums as well.
This newly rediscovered passion for drumming was just enough motivation to work hard and earn enough money for his first drum kit, which he purchased in the fall of 2001, at the age of 15. By Christmas of the same year, he added a guitar to his instrument collection, and continued to teach himself songs by his favorite bands, dreaming of the day when he could play his own music in large, sold-out stadiums.
After high school, Kalal had already experienced a firsthand taste of the Minneapolis music scene by performing with a few bands with minor success. He graduated from the Institute of Production and Recording in 2007 with an A.A.S. degree in Audio Production and Engineering, as well as a certification in Pro Tools Music Operation. During his time in college, he decided to start a solo project, because he had hundreds of songs that had not yet been recorded.
Choosing a name proved to be difficult at first, but he eventually settled on the name Airport Weather, which was a term he created for his favorite atmospheric condition. He sought to turn Airport Weather into a 4-piece rock band, but after 7 solo acoustic shows, he found himself turning into a comedy act—his heartfelt song writing had been suffering to ‘90s covers and improvised parody songs. He took a break from the stage to rethink his goals and focus more on writing and recording new material.
In 2008, he introduced a web exclusive concept called The Archives, and Midnight Notion was officially born. With a new name, new songs, and a new look, Kalal introduced a solo project with the rock and roll attitude, but without the dangerous influence of sex, drugs, and alcohol. Holding strong to his morals, Kalal produces relatable lyrics, catchy melodies, head-banging instrumentals, and song styles for every type of music enthusiast.
Midnight Notion's full-length debut, Somewhere in Dreamworld, is well underway, and the 2 followup albums, Reality For Breakfast, and Control of the World, are already in preproduction. With so many songs written and ready to be played, Kalal is finally ready to find able musicians who will assist in bringing these songs to the stage. In time, the world will see that Midnight Notion truly is …more than just an idea!
