News broke today that rock and roll icon Tom Petty has passed away at Age 66. His songs made a huge impact, sustaining regular airplay for decades, and losing him so suddenly is truly heartbreaking.

When I was in elementary school, my ex-step-dad (long story) would listen to the radio stations that would play Tom Petty’s music. I was too young to appreciate it, and actually despised it for a long time. But as I grew in my musical tastes and became an artist myself, I began to understand why so many people found inspiration in the infectiously memorable hooks he put into every song.

From “Learning to Fly” to “Running Down A Dream,” Petty reminded me how hard it is to wait, but that I should never back down. I learned how to play “Free Fallin’” in high school (who didnt’!?), and I even changed the lyrics to be about Lord of the Flies for a class project. In March 2014, at Fine Line, I covered “Breakdown,” which is one of the catchiest little grooves I can think of.

Needless to say, he became one of the many inspirations for my music, and it’s unfortunate to hear of his sudden passing. I find it important, though, not to dwell on his death. Instead, let us celebrate the life that was by running down our own dreams, learning how to fly, and never backing down!

Rest in peace, Tom.
