Trivia

Though the record is Midnight Notion’s 3rd Release, Somewhere in Dreamworld was intended to be the debut record. It began in 2006, when Bryce was going to college at the Institute of Production and Recording (IPR) in Minneapolis. His first thought was to produce a fake live album, adding in between-song banter between different versions of himself, and canned audience cheers. It didn’t take long before he decided it would be best to stick with a proper studio record.

The first song written and recorded with the intent of becoming part of the record was “Sidewalk.”

Version 1 of the record (2006–2007) was 10 songs long, and was recorded 3 separate times! Each time Bryce and his engineer, Josh Levi, recorded the record, they’d learn new techniques and seek to apply them to newer versions. Bryce continued to tinker with recording techniques and songwriting until graduation left him without a studio to work in, and the project got shelved.

The acoustic guitar part for “Karen” was recorded during the first Dreamworld sessions, and later recycled for The Archives: 1–10.

Version 2 (2008-2017) had 14 tracks, and was recorded in Bryce’s home studio. During the recording process, he considered releasing a demo version of the record, featuring 4 of the songs and 1 brand new instrumental. The demo began as The Band Quest Demo, then “accidentally” became March to Midnight.

In 2017, Bryce sent the 14-song demo version of the record to a number of close friends and asked for their honest opinions. A recurring theme in most of the feedback was that the lyrics were weak. Bryce took it to heart, realizing he had been focusing more energy on the music and not nearly enough on what he was writing. In the process, he drastically changed the lyrics for “Last Breath” and the title track. He also cut some old songs in favor of new tunes “Heartache Collector,” “Reverie,” and “The Lone Wolf.”

All of the music for this version was recorded by Bryce in his small condo, which meant he could not record live drums without deeply affecting his neighbors. Instead, he performed every drum part on a Roland TD-25K electric kit, and sent the MIDI signal to his producer, who turned them into more realistic samples.
